I can’t remember who came up with this, but it was shown at a lecture on surgical education recently. The point is, surgical education is not what it used to be. We now have work hour restrictions, which equates to less time in the hospital and fewer accumulated procedures for graduating residents. Will our future surgeons be experienced enough to go out and practice on their own? (learning to operate is all about time to task). Will future surgeons be experienced enough to deal with the most complex cases (like a pilot landing a plane on the Hudson)?
“Who is going to land the plane on the Hudson?”
