“You don’t win the race by turning around and looking at where the other guy is at.”

Highschool cross-country coach

During a race, many runners are tempted to turn their heads to see where their competition is behind them (i.e how close). From the very first day of practice my coach engrained in us that you cannot win a race that way. Whether that be a HS CC race, or any race in life. Your energy should be focused on your performance and doing the very best you can without giving thought to those around you. You have to run your own race in life.
